Progress on Central Station works

During the five day closure over Christmas, work at Central Station focused on completing the tiling around the bottom of the escalators and lift area. Tiling works were also carried out on the Northern Concourse and will continue to roll out to other parts of the Station over the coming months.

Great progress was also made on the new roof canopy at the Station, which is now nearing completion. The roof canopy, once fully revealed, will allow natural light to filter onto the concourse .

The fourth and final escalator and two new lifts have now been commissioned, these will provide easy access to customers to move from the upper to lower concourses.

Later this month, the tower crane that has been dominating the skyline over the station for most of last year will be removed.

Meanwhile, the construction team has reached the metro tunnels located 27 metres below ground.

In the months ahead, works at Central Station will focus on the entrance at Eddy Avenue. Works will include building and installing new curved columns that will greet customers as they enter the Station as well as installation of the new temporary gateline.

The team made fantastic progress during 2020 and I am looking forward to seeing the ongoing delivery of a significantly improved customer environment at Central over the coming months.
